Single transducer high-frequency (ultrasonic) fatigue testing equipment has been used for the investigation of resonance frequency changes due to crack initiation. Annealed copper samples have been ultrasonically fatigued and metallographically examined by scanning electron microscopy. The slip-band formation and crack initiation are related to the change in the system resonance frequency, and the results are discussed in relation to early crack detection in high-frequency fatigue testing.
