Major pressure vessel design codes in the U. K. make no recommendations for design of very thin end closures. Efficient design methods for these ends, with thickness/diameter ratios less than 0. 002, are required. Recent work in this area is outlined in the article, which discusses numerical and model studies, prototype studies, and design considerations.
