Equations to Determine the Air/Fuel Ratio in S. I. Engines.

In continuation of investigations, the equation to determine the excess-air factor in S. I. engines has been developed further. This equation is based upon a complete balance of the substances entering the combustion chamber and those leaving it, implicitly covering the exhaust gases' H//2 concentrations. Together with the test data on the concentrations of CO//2, CO, C//3H//8, O//2, and NO//x in the exhaust gas, this equation represents the excess-air factor under the same qualifications as in the equations of other authors as well, namely, that it is not possible to cover exhaustively all the hydrocarbons with the C//3H//8 equivalent. The empirical exhaust data show that J. Brettschneider's results on the excess-air factor deviate much less from Simons' when the equilibrium constant calculated is used.
