摘要
Although process technology based on the use of expendable expanded-polystyrene patterns has been available to the foundry industry since 1958, it is only within the last five years that intensive research and development work, by major organizations worldwide, has culminated in a reliable process for the commercial production of castings using unbonded sand moulds. However, whilst the potential of the process is undisputed, there is still the need to validate costs for the sustained industrial operation of the process and the need to establish the product range for which the process is most suited. In this updated presentation, the author has reviewed the literature published on the use of expendable polystyrene patterns during the period 1978 to 1986 with the objectives of highlighting the features of the process and its current status.
