The paper presents the hysteresis behaviour of axially loaded reinforced concrete bracing members. The object was to study the reduction in stiffness with number of cycles and energy dissipation capacity. An existing 'compression-only' loading system was modified to provide tension-compression cyclic loading. Eight specimens were tested having effective length to least lateral dimension ratio as 20 and 30. The effect of longitudinal steel, slenderness ratio and confinement of concrete are analyzed in this paper. It is concluded that reinforced concrete bracing specimens possess considerably more strength and stiffness in compression than in tension. A simple triangular hysteresis model is proposed which accounts for different elastic stiffnesses in tension and compression, stiffness degradation and pinching-in effects.
