Most of the early uses of computers were centered around research projects in the universities and in government. Most research projects run by faculty members were sponsored by outside groups such as the National Science Foundation (NSF); the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR); the Advanced Research Projects of the Army (ARPA); the Office of Naval Research; the Department of Education (DOE); and the National Institute of Education (NIE). These research projects almost always involved the use of graduate students who were working on master’s or doctor’s degrees. Particular courses frequently arose from the research projects and; thus; enriched the computer science curriculum.The National Science Foundation provided a great deal of support in the development of information science programs. These early programs frequently came closer to library science in content; concentrating on the handling of textual information. In fact; the emerging departments often were named departments of library and information science. The departments at Georgia Institute of Technology and Drexel University were among the early ones to receive grants from NSF.One of the first attempts at developing a computer science course for the secondary schools was made and published in 1965 by the School Mathematics Study Group (SMSG) at Stanford University. It was entitled Algorithms; Computation and Mathematics. A major revision entitled Computer Science: A First Course was published by Forsythe et al. (1 975). This revision; as well as the original SMSG publication; was used by a number of secondary schools and for an introductory course in computer science. Although the textbook was too advanced for most high school students; it was quite useful for classes of talented students (Atchison; 1978). A grant from NSF enabled CBMS ( 1972) to prepare recommendations concerning high school computer education;
