This paper investigates the effect of nonlinearity on overvoltages caused by line faults in HVDC schemes. A nonlinear model of a point-to-point scheme is developed. The model is then extended to a three terminal scheme. The results obtained from both schemes are compared with each other and with other results obtained from previous work in the same field. An optimal controller of the bang-bang type is designed for a linearized model and applied to the original model, resulting in a suboptimal controller.
