Aluminum alloys, with properties and strength-to-weight ratios that make possible the design of future aircraft with improved payload and design safety margins, are described. Alloy 7055-T77511 extrusions are best suited for applications in which compressive strength is the critical design criterion, in applications such as upper wing structures, horizontal stabilizers, and keel beams. Alloy 2524 products for fuselage skin offer high fracture toughness to reduce the need for tear traps, and this enables weight savings. The materials also provide high resistance to the growth of fatigue cracks, and improved formability of the alloys enables low manufacturing costs and reduced process flow time.
