Interphases between polymers and metals of their oxides, ceramics, and other polymers are commonplace in the transportation and renewable energy fields. The properties of these interphases can govern the performance of the structures and devices that contain them. Seven technology areas have been identified in which there are research needs and opportunities. These areas are interphase formation mechanisms, mechanisms of interphase degradation, interphase characterization techniques including in-process monitoring, surface treatments, polymer coating/formation methods including plasma polymerization and other vacuum deposition techniques, testing including adhesion measurements and accelerated life testing, and process tolerances. Essential background is presented and the research needed is listed for each of these technology areas. The priorities for fundamental and applied research needs in the seven areas are classified as crucial, important, and useful.
