New Plant for Life Tests on EHV Cables.

This article discusses the problems associated with the design and manufacture of two fluid-oil-immersed cables (and appurtenant fittings) for voltage levels of up to 765 kV, having different characteristics. The new already operating plant for life tests on these cables is then described. These tests are similar to those already carried out or being carried out at the Waltz, USA, testing plant. During the foreseen test period (about 2 years), the cables will undergo voltage levels and suitably chosen load cycles to simulate an operating period of some 40 years. Lastly, the aim of these tests is discussed, as well as the experiments carried out during the first period of testing plant operation and the program for future work.
