A laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser Q-switched passively with a YAG color center chip has been developed. The Q-switched pulse output has a duration of 25-70 ns, an energy of about 7.9μJ and a repetition frequency of 1.25-5.0kHz when the laser cavity parameters and pump power are changed. The Q-switched dynamics is analyzed with the rate equation theory. The theoretical and experimental results agree well.
