The advent of powerful computer-based supervisory control and data acquisition systems has provided one vehicle for the development of leak detection systems: leak detection software packages execute as special applications programs in the supervisory computers, concurrent with monitoring and control applications. SCADA base leak detection techniques such as static testing pressure gradients, mass balance, negative waves and parallel simulation are described together with a discussion of their uses and advantages.
