Effect of Weld Geometry and of Some Defects on the Dynamic Strength of Butt-End Welded Joints.

Using the method of dynamic photoelasticity, the effect of weld geometry (the height and width of the backing weld, displacement of edges, notches, poor penetration of the root, as well as of split joints and of joints with remaining lining) on the formation of the stressed state in the welded joint zone under dynamic loading is investigated. The kinetics of the formation of the stressed state is shown. It is found that, from the point of view of failure, the most dangerous are: split joints, welds with remaining lining and with a backing weld for which the relationship between the height and width is greater than 1/6. Under dynamic loading the two-sided symmetrical welded joints show the best results.
