Many methods of excluding the influence of Doppler broadening and of obtaining lines having a homogeneous width have by now been realized. The maximum widths are limited by the time of interaction between the particles and the field. Methods that can lengthen this time are therefore urgent. It is thus of interest to use ion-trapping methods, wherein the ion can be trapped and localized in a small volume for hours, i. e. , its lifetime in the trap is long compared with the coherent times of spectroscopic experiments. The article discusses one-photon-absorption resonance, and two-photon absorption.
