Extensive and well-illustrated documentation of the identification of copper wire breaks exists and in general there is good agreement on the majority of causes. As a result copper wire breaks can be identified as originating from one of three causes; rod source breaks, rod drawing breaks or redrawing breaks. The vast majority of wire breaks will comprise rod source and redrawing breaks. Table 1 lists briefly some of the more common causes of breaks in these three groups.
