Following an analysis of the motivations leading to the extension of digital transmission and switching techniques the local telecommunication network solutions for the location of the analogue/digital interface are compared. The goals and the frame of a study project for a fully digital local network are outlined. The chosen structure includes digital (PCM) subscriber sets connected each with a bidirectional digital line to concentrators. The restricted-autonomy concentrators are linked with the digital local exchange over a 30-channel multiplex PCM link.
