In order to assess the availability of solar energy arriving on the earth, measurement of solar radiation at some locations is essential. From measurements, empirical models are developed to predict the availability of solar energy at other locations. Different instruments and their utilities are as follows. Pyrheliometer: Instrument for measurement of the direct solar radiation flux at normal incidence. Pyranometer: Instrument for measurement of the direct and diffuse irradiance arriving from the whole hemisphere. pyranometer with a shading device: Instrument that measures diffuse solar irradiance within a solid angle with the exception of the solid angle subtended by the sun's disk.
