Includes a portable computer with a large memory capacity. This allows information to be carried to the work site without relying totally on the radio link for access to information. A mobile unit in the vehicle provides the capacity to receive and store transmitted data, even when the hand-held computer isn't present. The system's design allows expanded applications and new technology. The design shows experience and knowledge of utility needs. Additionally, it's backed by a vendor with a proven record of customer support for utilities. The system used by Consumers Power can upload prescheduled work orders via phone lines. About 80 percent of the work at the utility is prescheduled. The system reduces congestion of the radio network and keeps radio channels open for orders that must be transmitted via radio - especially emergency orders.
