The pressure drop in laminar and turbulent flow through a tapered tube was studied experimentally. An expression for the pressure drop in laminar flow was derived from an integral energy balance over the taper. The pressure drop in turbulent flow was related to the Reynolds number and the angle of taper by assuming that the ratio of the energies of dissipation in turbulent and laminar flow are the same in a tapered tube as in a straight tube. The Reynolds numbers corresponding to zero pressure drop and to flow separation in a tapered tube were calculated and compared with the experimental values.
