The advances in the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which involves HPLC with very high pressures and columns having very small particle sizes, were discussed. A study was made of the performance and mechanical strength of the Waters 1.5 μm C18 ethyl-bridged hybrid porous particles for liquid chromatography at pressures up to 65 000 psi (4500 bar). The particle were packed into 30 μm id fused silica capillary columns up to 50 cm in length and isocratic development was used. The results show that the particles are well suited for ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and provides similar chromatographic performance compared to nonporous silica.
