Crack Opening Displacement (COD) tests were carried out on submerged arc weld metals. The fracture initiation properties of weld metals were related to the microstructures. The relationship between these was investigated from the standpoint of unit crack path on the fracture surface of COD specimen. The brittle fracture surfaces in COD specimens were found to be closely related to the microstructure.
