Production and marketing of nickel and nickel alloys is an international business. German companies must be competitive in the world market. This is especially true for the American and south Asian markets. German companies are dependent on these markets. One third of the world's nickel production is consumed in Europe: 300 000 t/a. The steel industry is the biggest nickel consumer: 550 000 t nickel for 17 million t stainless steels. Nickel and nickel alloys are key materials for plant construction, electronics, electronical industry, automotive industry and aircraft industry. Alternative solutions are not available.
