This paper illustrates its thesis by consideration of four compliant vessel designs for the offshore oil industry. The vessels are used to carry out drilling, production of work-over activities above subsea wellheads. Thus, performance yardsticks for such designs lay emphasis on characteristics which assist the vessel's function.
