Based on the field observed data obtained in Fangezhuang Colliery, China, this paper analyzes the movement of strata overlying the working area along the strike and the dip, and properties of roof movement over gateways without coal pillars. It investigates the relation between the movement of overlying strata and that of the roof over gateways without coal pillars. Suggestions are made on how to determine the working resistance and selection of support types for gateways without coal pillars.
