Contrary to popular belief, the distributed control system (DCS) is not dead; it just grew up. In Automation Research Corporation's (ARC) view, the DCS market has evolved to the point where vendors provide total automation solutions from hardware to software, services, as well as field and enterprise system integration. ARC has adopted the term process automation system (PAS) to describe this expanded, solutions-oriented business.
