Two requirements of gas-solid contacting in the blast furnace lead to the concepts of structural uniformity and chemical uniformity of the stock column. Their characteristics are dictated by charging practice and the nature of the burden materials used, and the proper burden distribution for currently preferred operation is one that gives a stock column having both structural and chemical non-uniformity.
