It has been nine and a half years since the Chernobyl Sarcophagus was constructed, during which time intensive research has been undertaken. Nevertheless, current knowledge of its condition is not complete and this provides considerable room for speculation. Hence in this article, before future plans are discussed, the present knowledge is reviewed to point out where the knowledge is lacking or incomplete.
