Drawing from the author's experience and involvement in the practical applications of synthetic materials used in the pulp mill and more particularly with regard to pulp washers, this paper traces the development and introduction of non-metals for fighting corrosion in pulp washing. The advent of synthetic wires resulted in a major change for the wire weaving industry and the pulp and paper industry. Rebuilding old washers with Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Plastic (GFRP), or covering new washers with synthetic materials in order to protect them in the 'closed system' pulp mill environment is but one of the most recent developments in the continuing struggle against corrosion.
