The system described in this paper consists of a network of low-cost FM radio transceivers interfaced to nearest telephone exchanges and digital equipment connected through modems to the transceivers. The FM transceivers have voice and data channels and act as interfacing units to the nearest telephone exchanges. Use of such FM units avoids the expensive cabling, copper and servicing costs associated with other means of linking far-flung and remote subscriber areas with the main telecom network. These single radio units can operate in the VHF (145 to 174 MHz) or UHF (400 to 470 MHz) bands. To make the system cost-effective the stations use a multiple-access technique.
