A versatile fixed exit double monochromator system was designed and constructed for NSLS to provide full flexibility in the selection of high energy X-ray photons for X-ray scattering experiments. The system is designed for operation in a helium atmosphere with beryllium window isolation. A water cooled tantalum slit which opens symmetrically is included to allow a horizontal beam of 8 mrad (approx. 100 mm wide white beam) at 12 m from the source. A variety of focusing devices and crystals can be mounted onto each goniometer. The system will allow a Bragg angle range from 3. 5 to 86. 5 degree and the independent control provides the opportunity for the low dispersive (mixed crystals) as well as the standard non-dispersive arrangement.
