Caustic solutions are widely and typically used in refinery and petrochemical plants to neutralize: the acidic materials that occur naturally in crude oil and its fractions; acidic reaction products that are produced by various chemical treating processes; and acidic materials formed during thermal and catalytic cracking such as hydrogen sulfide, mercptans and organic acids. Details are given of a process and relevant equipment in which a combined sodium/calcium hydroxide (NCA) bed removes more sulfur compounds at lowest cost with less waste effluent.
