Clutter is one of the major problems in radar design. As a result, considerable effort and ingenuity has gone into the design of clutter elimination circuits. If the desired target is moving relative to the clutter (e. g. , an aircraft in flight near the ground), it is possible to use the doppler frequency shift produced by the target's motion to filter out the undesired stationary returns not shifted in frequency. This is the basic principle behind moving target indicator and pulse doppler radars. This article reviews the merits of analog and digital MTI and pulse-doppler systems.
