A study was made of pure Fe-C-Si and Fe-C-Si-P alloys in order to explain the existence of thin liquid metal channels which occur during solidification of compacted cast irons. These channels play an important role in the growth and development of compacted cast iron. It was found that they are formed as a result of segregation of certain trace elements.
