摘要
Factors causing the attenuation of ultrasound in spot welds are investigated. Previous work has suggested that changes in steel grain structure, which occur during spot welding, cause increased attenuation in large-diameter welds. However, experiments described here suggest that other factors, notably weld surface irregularities of the electrode indent, influence the attenuation rate more significantly. Different sets of spot welds were made using different spot welding machines. Sample welds were also produced, which had their surfaces ground down to erase the electrode imprint. With this selection it was possible to assess the affect of grain structure changes on attenuation relative to other factors. The evidence gathered strongly favours weld surface irregularities as the primary cause of ultrasound attenuation in spot welds.
