A quenching car, which is an essential element in coke production, has to sustain extremely severe working conditions such as: the impact of falling coke, the abrasive action of sliding coke, heat impingement, the aggressive action of quencing water, etc. These factors cause a rapid deterioration of the car and, as a consequence, the service life of a quenching car, up to its withdrawal for a general overhaul, rarely exceeds a period of one year. Taking into account the data published on this subject in a great many domestic and foreign papers, the opinion of quenching car designers, of repair teams, as well as that of the personnel of seven selected coking plants in Poland using the cars, the authors recommend the use of stainless steels for the construction of quenching cars, or still better ferritic corrosion-resistant steel. Attentiion is also drawn to the susceptibility of austenitic corrosion-resistant steel to dangerous stress corrosion, hence the use of this steel in quenching cars may lead to cracks in elements and ultimately to the failure of cars.
