'Iolair', a twin-hulled, semi-submersible is described as a highly sophisticated piece of engineering. Iolair's design incorporates powerful fire-fighting equipment, rapid rescue and well-kill capabilities and life-saving facilities. Cameras keep a constant watch on remote areas, such as the anchor winches in the four corner columns, which would normally be unmanned. Computers listen to and monitor each other. Almost every part of the vessel is duplicated, or backed up by similar equipment, so that failure of any one system would not render it unfunctionable.
