The following article researches the model of the effective width is determining the load carrying capacity of cross-sections and columns. Especially extensive studies of buckling plates are carried out. The results will be compared to existing standards. A new definition of the effective width is derived from research. In the next step the method of effective internal reactions is introduced, that enables an essential simplification of calculations. Examples show the good correspondence to experiments.
