The paper reports on experimental investigations on hypar shells which were carried out to study the influence of edge beam stiffness on the bearing behavior of these structures. Plexiglass models with three different curvatures and five different edge beam stiffnesses, each under the influence of uniform distributed load (snow and dead loads), were measured by means of strain gages and displacement transducers. The results were verified by a simple finite element calculation (triangular elements with six degrees of freedom). The results indicate that the magnitude of stresses and their distribution over the shell depend on the edge beam stiffness.
