This paper describes an optical digital comparison unit (ODCU) using the light-amplifying optical switch, for performing multiple binary word comparisons that can give less-than, equal-to and greater-than comparisons. The results show that a processing rate of around 4×1010 16-bit word comparisons/s can be achieved for a comparator having 2.5×104 pixels, making the device applicable to highly parallel, numerical processing environment.
