ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION.

The problems and difficulties of construction in developing countries have received a great deal of publicity in recent years. Alternative, labor-based construction methods have been advocated by various bodies but their use is still very limited. Rather than advocate the change to alternative methods it would be much better to adopt an approach which allows engineers to examine a wider range of construction methods and select the most suitable. There are, however, difficulties. This paper examines the problems and constraints which limit engineers, the causes of restrictions. Examples from various developing countries are cited.
