A simple system for measuring low light levels by counting individual photons can be assembled from a photomultiplier tube, an amplifier, a discriminator, and a counter. The function of each of these components is dscussed. Measurement techniques are suggested to assist in evaluating tubes, amplifiers, and discriminators.
