This Note uses theory and examples to illustrate the relationship between material toughness, failure stress and critical defect size. Examples are given in which flaws of accurately known size may remain in a structure, thus obviating expensive repair, because Fracture Mechanics analysis determined that they would failure stress and critical defect size.
