Fracture tests were conducted on automatic TIG (tungsten inert gas) welded 9% nickel steel plate welded with a matching derritic filler metal. Results show that impact and tensile properties, such as tensile and yield strength, are as high as parent metal values, indicating the possibility of raising design stresses. Fracture toughness in both 25mm and 8mm thick specimens was excellent, and could be improved by remelting the final bead surfaces with a TIG arc.
