The spectacular changes which take place on magnetite (Fe3O4) during high energy ball milling are studied. It is shown that Fe3O4 undergoes a total phase transformation to α-Fe2O4 when exposed to high energy ball milling. The saturation magnetization decreases: first because of a reduction in particle size and after the onset of phase transformation, due the formation of haematite and supermagnetic particles in the system.
