DTN, AN ALL-DIGITAL TELEPHONY NETWORK FOR VOICE, DATA, TEXT AND FAX COMMUNICATION.

The capacity of the 64 kbit/s speech channel currently being introduced in public telephone networks makes its use for text, video and data services a particularly attractive proposition. However, the full benefit of the resultant new services will only be felt if a fully digital communications network is provided from subscriber to subscriber. Since the major advantages are in the field of business communications, the proposal is to install such a network for business purposes as soon as possible and to make provision for its subsequent transition to a digital telephony network for the general public. This paper discusses factors surrounding these proposals.
