Ratio was found between amounts of Cr(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2 in the dense layer of conversion coat on Mg as deposited in solutions containing different contents of chromate. It is shown that higher chromate content of electrolyte leads to an increase of the relative content of Cr(OH)3 in the dense layer, the steady thickness of which being reduced. An increase of Cr(OH)3 fraction in the dense layer leads to higher protection efficiency of coat. This is explained by the change in the charge sign of the surface hydroxide layer on metal. Zn cations introduced in the composition of solutions significantly improves the protection efficiency of chromate coat which is explained by Zn hydroxide formed at Mg surface.
