Much of the rationale supporting the orifice measuring concept is based on calculations that cannot be substantiated scientifically. However, this is not a new discovery - the technical papers referred to in this series were developed by many diverse segments of the gas industry. These documents indicate orifice meter accuracy is suspect in a multitude of significant measuring areas. The turbine meter's accuracy and performance characteristics can be proven both theoretically and pragmatically. These meters can be calibrated at or near actual operating conditions. The turbine meter's accuracy and flow range are known values, not subjective estimates, as is the case with the orifice meter. Based on existing engineering data, the turbine meter is a significantly more precise measuring device than the orifice meter and has much larger rangeability.
