At present new high speed lines for a maximum speed of about 250 km/hr are already being operated by the Italian State Railways (FS) and the French National Railways (SNCF) and under construction at the German Federal Railway (DB). The lines are being operated with 3 kv dc (FS), 25 kv/50 hz (SNCF) and 15 kv/16 2/3 hz (DB) single phase ac. Different systems have been adopted for traction power generation and supply. The guarantee of a reliable current supply at such high speeds has led to new constructions of the overhead contact system.
