Possible laser applications for surface treatment of metals are described. The introductory part presents the development of laser concept and some practical ideas from laser applications. The laser surface treatment is mostly related to the selective hardening or selective surface alloying of a given part, with an intention to improve wear resistance or service life. During the surface treatment some problems imposed by surface reflexion are encountered. This drawback is eliminated using various methods. Some concepts of the laser treatment metallurgy are briefly enlighted and several application examples are given.
