Core and valence levels of various sulfur-containing conducting polymers, such as poly-p-phenylene sulfide, polybenzothiophene, polythiophene, polythieno left bracket 2,3-b right bracket thiophene and polydithienophene, have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Their electronic structures (atomic charge, band gap and the nature of the highest occupied band) are deduced from XPS spectra and compared to Valence Effective Hamiltonian calculations.
